The Syakkin Enkoji temple is located in the mountains of Hirata town, Sukumo City. It is the 39th Fudasho (temple which issues amulets) on the Shikoku Pilgrimage of 88 Holy Sites. This Shingon temple was founded by priest Gyouki in the first year of the Jinki period. The temple was originally named Tsurukame but was renamed Shyakkizan Enkoji Temple when later revived by priest Kukai. The temple houses a gong from the 11th Enki period and is regarded as an important cultural treasure. According to a legend told, one small red turtle (shyakki) carried the gong on its back, climbing up to the temple from the sea. The mountain was thereafter named Shyakkizan.
