The Matsuo Pass is located at an elevation of 300 meters on the border of Iyo and Tosa. There is an observatory at the ruins of the Sumimoto Castle which is a short distance from the pass. It is also possible to see Sukumo Bay from the Matsuo Pass. Due to the pass's significance as a connecting road between Iyo and Tosa, it was often used by pilgrims and shogunate's for exploration, observation and surveillance of the area. It was also widely used by travelers. Due to this wide usage, many signposts still remain along the road. Today, it is used as 'Shikoku's Road' route.
