Okinoshima

沖の島 沖の島

Okinoshima is an island which has a unique culture and way of living. It is a place engulfed by nature.   Okinoshima boasts unique stone steps and stone walls which are scattered across the island. These stone walls and steps have evolved after years of habitation by people who have had to endure sea breezes and strong winds.

Beautiful mosaic-like fields and shelves used for drying fish and vegetables make the view of the island even more charming. The history of Okinoshima involves the island being separated during the Medieval Period when it was separated into two territories,  Tosa  and Iyouwajima. After a dispute in 1659 led by Kenzo Nonaka which ended in favor of  the Tosa side, the island was later incorporated into the domain now known as KochiPrefecture.

Mt Imoseyama

妹背山 This mountain, with the elevation of 404 meters, is the highest peak on the island. Mt Imoseyama gained its name from a well known folk tale.  As the legend goes, a peasant brother took his younger sister, by boat, to go rice planting.  Due to  the fun that the siblings were having on the boat, they fell fast asleep. Unknown to their parents,  the tide took their boat floating through the seas. After much struggle, they finally arrived at the island now named Okinoshima.  The siblings although in a deep state of grief had no choice but to use the farming equipment they had brought with them on the boat and establish a farm. After much time had passed on their deserted island, they began living as husband and wife.
