大江　卓

大江　卓(おおえ　たく)　弘化4年～大正10年(1847-1921)

大江卓は維新の志士として活躍し、維新以後は被差別民の人権擁護のために努力しました。
神奈川権令のときに起きたマリア・ルーズ号事件では不法に奴隷のように扱われていた清国人を国際法にのっとって解放しました。
その後土佐出兵計画の首謀者の一人として獄中生活を送りますが、出獄後は人権擁護を目指して帝国公道会を設立する一方、自らは出家して全国を行脚しました。

Taku Oe was known to be one of the more progressive figures during the Meji Period.
He contributed his efforts to protect discrimination and human eights.
In 1872, he served as a judge in Kanazawa Prefecture and played a central role in rescuing the Qing people from their slave owners (Maria Luz Incident).
This incident led to a major legislation which served to emancipate Japan's lower class.
In 1877,Oe was arrested for treason by the Bakufu for his involvement in the "Tosa Dispatch of Troops" plan.
After his twvelve years imprisonment, he worked to protect human rights and established the "Teikoku Kondou Kai".
In 1914, he retired from business and political life and became a Buddhist Priest.
